This page is for two people: the son or daughter in Australia who sponsors, and the parents in Punjab who apply. Every fact about the visa comes from the Department of Home Affairs’ own pages, linked below and checked on 30 September and 3 October 2026. Home Affairs decides every application.
Two ways for parents to visit on a Visitor visa (subclass 600)
Tourist stream (apply outside Australia). Your parents apply for themselves, as visitors coming to see family. Home Affairs says it generally grants a 3-month stay and might grant up to 12 months in certain circumstances; for a parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident it may grant a visa valid for more than 12 months, with no more than 12 months in Australia in any 18-month period and health insurance arranged. The cost is from AUD250. They must be outside Australia when they apply and when the visa is decided. Your invitation letter can go with their application. (Tourist stream)
Sponsored Family stream. Home Affairs says this stream lets people who are sponsored, usually by a family member, come to Australia to visit their family. It costs AUD250. Home Affairs says the standard stay is 3 months, that it may grant up to 12 months in limited circumstances, and that it generally grants a single entry. It might ask the sponsor to pay a security bond, usually AUD 5,000 to AUD 15,000 per person (it can ask for any amount). (Sponsored Family stream)
What you, the sponsor in Australia, provide
- Form 1149, Application for sponsorship for Sponsored Family Visitors. Your parents provide a copy of the completed form with their application.
- Documents that prove the relationship between each parent and you, such as birth certificates, passport pages showing the names of parents, or marriage certificates.
- A security bond, only if Home Affairs asks for one.
If you cannot prove the relationship with documents, Home Affairs says your parents can apply in the Tourist stream instead, with your letter of invitation or support. Visa Connection is not a registered migration agent in Australia: we help your parents in Punjab. If you want advice on your own obligations as a sponsor under Australian law, a registered migration agent or an Australian lawyer can give it.
What your parents gather in Punjab
Home Affairs publishes its own document checklist for the Visitor visa, with a separate list for the Sponsored Family stream. That list is the final word. Families usually start with:
- Valid passports for both parents
- Evidence of how the trip is paid for, by them or by you
- Evidence of their life in India: family, home, land, work, business or pension
- Details of earlier travel abroad
A short letter from you helps: who is coming, for how long, where they will stay and who pays. See our invitation letter guide and the free parents’ visa checklist.
Longer stays: Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa, subclass 870
Home Affairs says this visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years, and lists AUD6,370 for up to 3 years. It has its own requirements; see the Home Affairs page. (subclass 870)
What we do in Jalandhar, and what Home Affairs decides
- A document checklist for your parents, matched to Home Affairs’ list
- A review of their documents, including funds and ties to India, before anything is uploaded
- A check that your parents’ documents match your invitation letter and the Form 1149 you complete
- Help with any biometrics or health-check appointment Home Affairs asks for, and with travel
- Every step explained in Punjabi, face to face, at our office on Police Line Road
What Home Affairs decides: every application, how long your parents may stay, and any conditions on the visa. Nobody can promise a visa.
