How much money must you show for a Latvian student residence permit?
Latvia publishes a clear monthly figure, and the route is a single one — you apply directly for a temporary residence permit.
- EUR 620 per month is the subsistence requirement set by PMLP, Latvia’s Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, for study at an accredited higher education institution
- Bringing family? Add EUR 620 per month for an adult and EUR 150 per month for a minor
- Some institutions set their own figure above the PMLP minimum, so check what your chosen university asks for as well as the national requirement
- Once your residence permit is approved you still apply for a 90-day long-stay (D) visa to travel to Latvia and collect the permit card there
Always check your specific institution’s figure as well as the national one. The university requirement is often the higher of the two, and it is the one that will hold up your file.

What order do the Latvian visa and residence permit come in?
Two stages, but in the opposite order to Lithuania. You apply for the temporary residence permit first; once it is approved you then obtain a 90-day long-stay (D) visa to travel and collect the permit card in Latvia. Lithuania runs the visa stage first. Either way, plan for two steps.
