How much money must you show for a Finnish student residence permit?
Finland publishes a precise figure, and it is one of the stricter ones to satisfy because the money has to be there before you apply.
- EUR 800 per month — which works out to EUR 9,600 for the first year
- If your course lasts a year or more, the full EUR 9,600 must already be in your account when you submit the application
- Work income is not accepted as your first-year funding — Migri wants independent funds up front
- If your university provides free accommodation or meals, the requirement can be lower — but only with contracts and letters from the institution to prove it

Why is Finland stricter about proof of funds than Sweden?
Because Finland wants the full first-year amount — EUR 9,600 — in your account at the moment you apply, and it will not count expected work income towards it. Sweden asks for a larger headline figure but accepts scholarships, loans and sponsorship as proof. A file that cannot meet one country’s funding rule may still meet the other’s, which is why we never treat the two as interchangeable. This is about the funding requirement alone — neither route makes an approval more likely.
