UK Visitor Visa from India: What the Officer Is Actually Checking

The Standard Visitor visa, explained plainly — and where applicants most often go wrong.

Most UK visitor refusals we review are not about money. They come down to one question the officer has to answer: will this person go back? Everything below flows from that.

How long can you stay on a UK Standard Visitor visa?

You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel, and the visa costs £135 for stays up to six months. Fees are set by the UK visa authority and change — we confirm the current figure at your consultation.

What must you prove to get a UK visitor visa?

  • You will leave the UK at the end of your visit — this is what the whole application rests on
  • You can support yourself and any dependants — or that someone else is funding the trip, with their evidence
  • You can pay for your return or onward journey — not just the outbound ticket
  • You are not making the UK your home by repeat visits — frequent back-to-back visits raise this exact concern

What can you not do on a UK visitor visa?

  • Work for a UK employer or be self-employed — except for specific permitted paid engagements
  • Claim public funds — benefits are not available on this visa
  • Live in the UK through frequent or successive visits — the rule exists precisely to stop this
  • Marry or register a civil partnership — that needs a different visa entirely

How do you actually show ties to India?

This is where most files we review are weakest, and it is the part no template can write for you. Ties are not one document — they are a picture built from your employment, your family, your property or business, and your ongoing commitments here. A salaried applicant, a business owner and a retired parent each evidence this completely differently.

A common mistake: sending a bank statement showing a large balance that appeared last week. A steady, explainable balance is worth far more to an officer than a big one that arrived just in time for the application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I was refused a UK visa before?

Yes. A previous refusal does not bar you. But the new application must address the exact reason for the earlier refusal — reapplying with the same file usually produces the same result. Bring the refusal letter.

How early should I apply?

The earliest permitted is three months before travel. We usually suggest applying as early as that window allows, because processing times vary and are outside anyone’s control.

Can you guarantee my UK visitor visa?

No. The decision rests solely with the UK visa authority. What we control is your file — that it is complete, honest and clearly presented.

For what we actually do on these files — document preparation, ties evidence and submission support — see our UK visitor visa service page.

For the current official rules, see the UK government’s official Standard Visitor visa page.
