When a family member abroad is seriously ill: the official urgent routes
Calm, factual help for families in Punjab who need to travel — what each government officially offers, and what it asks for. Checked against the official pages on 28–29 September 2026.
When someone in the family abroad is seriously ill, a parent, brother or sister in Punjab may need to travel. This page sets out, country by country, what each government officially offers when travel is urgent, and what it asks for. Some routes exist, but none of them is automatic.
The embassy or immigration authority decides whether an urgent request is accepted, and how fast. No consultant, including us, can promise a visa or a date. First, check the passport: if your relative already holds a valid visa for that country, they may not need a new one.
United Kingdom
UKVI sells optional Priority and Super Priority services where they are offered — £500 and £1,000 on top of the visa fee (GOV.UK faster decision). Check availability when you book at the visa centre. GOV.UK says a decision can still take longer, for example if more information is needed, and that you will not usually get the fee back. Standard processing times.
Canada
IRCC says its web form can’t be used to speed up an application unless the applicant already qualifies for urgent processing, and that calling won’t make it faster (IRCC processing times). Check canada.ca for the current guidance. For advice on the application itself, speak to a licensed Canadian immigration consultant (RCIC) or lawyer.
What we do for Canada: help in Punjab only — gathering and organising documents quickly, explaining in Punjabi, and help with biometrics and travel. Visa Connection is not a licensed Canadian (RCIC) immigration adviser.
Australia
Home Affairs says: if you have urgent, compassionate or compelling reasons for travel, submit evidence to show this; and if you are visiting to support a family member, submit evidence of this, for example a letter from their doctor (Home Affairs). The Department of Home Affairs decides.
United States
The U.S. Embassy decides any request for an earlier (expedited) interview appointment in an urgent situation, and explains the current process on its official visa pages (U.S. Embassy in India). Book through the official appointment system only.
New Zealand
After applying, you can in some cases ask Immigration New Zealand for an “escalation”. INZ considers compelling personal circumstances and humanitarian factors, and is clear that accepting an escalation does not mean the application will be approved or assessed faster (INZ escalation).
What we do for New Zealand: help in Punjab only — documents, a Punjabi walk-through and travel. Visa Connection is not a licensed New Zealand immigration adviser.
Europe (Schengen)
The general rule: apply at least 15 days before the trip; the normal decision time is 15 days and can be extended (European Commission). Each consulate decides whether it can make an exception.
- Germany: special appointments are generally limited to compelling and unplanned medical and humanitarian reasons, requested through the missions’ contact form; an application for travel within 15 calendar days of reaching the visa section is normally returned unprocessed (German Missions FAQ).
- Italy: the Embassy’s visa page describes no urgent-appointment route and warns applicants to distrust anyone promising fast-track evaluation (Embassy of Italy).
What proof is usually asked
- Proof of the reason for urgent travel, where the authority asks for it
- Proof of the relationship to the family member abroad
- The normal visitor-visa documents: passport, funds, ties to India and the host’s details
You don’t need to tell us about anyone’s health. We never ask what the illness is. If an authority asks for a medical letter, the family decides whether to share it, and we use it only for that application.

Urgent family visits — FAQs
Can a visa be issued urgently if a family member abroad is seriously ill?
Some governments offer a paid faster service or accept a request for urgent handling, but none of these is automatic. The embassy or immigration authority decides whether a request is accepted and how fast the decision comes. No consultant can promise a visa or a date.
What proof is usually asked for urgent travel?
Where a government says what it wants, it is usually proof of the reason for urgent travel (Australia gives a letter from the family member's doctor as an example), proof of the relationship, and the normal visitor-visa documents such as passport, funds and ties to India.
Do you need to know about the illness?
No. We never ask what the illness is. Tell us the country and when your relative needs to travel. If an authority asks for a medical letter, the family decides whether to share it, and we use it only for that application.
Does a paid priority service guarantee a quick decision?
No. The UK, for example, says a Priority or Super Priority decision can still take longer and the fee is not usually refunded. New Zealand says accepting an escalation request does not mean the application will be approved or assessed faster.
What does Visa Connection do in an urgent case?

Does a relative in Punjab need to travel?
Tell us the country and when they need to travel. We never ask about anyone’s health.
Disclaimer: Whether an urgent request is accepted, and how fast a decision comes, is decided solely by the embassy or immigration authority.
