Schengen visitor visa — at a glance
Source: European Commission, Applying for a Schengen visa and Schengen area, checked 29 September 2026. Each consulate adds its own checklist on top.
Who this is for
Families in Punjab visiting children and relatives in Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, Spain and the rest of the Schengen area; tourists; and relatives invited to a wedding or family event in Europe (see weddings & celebrations abroad).
Which consulate to apply to
- Visiting one country: apply to that country’s consulate or its visa centre.
- Visiting several: apply to the country where you will spend the longest time.
- Equal stays: apply to the country you enter first.
- Punjab residents apply through the consulate or centre that covers North India. For Italy, that is the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi, which covers Punjab and Chandigarh. Applications are submitted by appointment at the VFS centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar (3rd floor, Aman Plaza, Nakodar Chowk).
The EU rules decide which consulate may handle your file, so we settle this first.
The Embassy’s fraud warning. The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi tells applicants to distrust agencies, agents, brokers, VFS staff or translators who offer visa facilitation services for additional fees, and asks them to report any such case to the Embassy. It also says no seller can influence the processing time or the decision. Visa Connection is a private agency and does charge a fee. Our fee pays for our work — the checklist, funds and ties review, travel plan, application form and booking your visa-centre appointment — as listed on our Fees & refunds page. We cannot buy a faster slot or influence the decision. You pay the visa fee and the VFS service charge directly, at the official rate, and you can also apply on your own without any agent. (Checked 30 September 2026.)
Documents we help you prepare
- Passport valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area
- The visa application form and an ICAO-standard photo
- Medical insurance covering emergency care, hospital treatment and repatriation for the whole trip
- Proof of the purpose: the host’s invitation, bookings and a day-by-day plan
- Proof of funds and accommodation, and of your ties to India
- Your fingerprints are taken when you apply, with some exemptions
The host’s part differs by country: Germany, Portugal and Italy each publish their own list. See what the host provides, country by country.
Where files go wrong
- The file went to the wrong consulate
- Insurance that does not cover the whole trip or the required risks
- A purpose or plan that does not match the bookings and the invitation
- Funds that cannot be explained, or weak ties to India
- An earlier refusal not declared honestly
If you are refused, the consulate must tell you why and how to appeal. Our refusal case review starts from that letter.

Schengen visitor visa — FAQs
Which country's consulate should I apply to?
Apply to the country you are visiting. If you visit several, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time; if the stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Punjab residents apply through the consulate or visa centre that covers North India.
How early can we apply for a Schengen visa?
No earlier than 6 months and at least 15 days before the trip, under the EU's rules. Some consulates ask for more time; Germany's missions in India advise applying at least three weeks ahead. Appointment slots fill up in peak season, so apply early.
How much does a Schengen visa cost?
The government fee is EUR 90 for an adult and EUR 45 for a child aged 6 to 12. A visa application centre may charge its own service fee on top. Our fee is separate and is listed on our Fees page.
My son or daughter is an EU citizen. Is there a faster route for us?
Family members of EU citizens who fall under the EU Free Movement Directive can be eligible for a free and faster visa procedure. Whether a parent qualifies depends on the conditions in that directive, so check with the consulate before you apply.
Does a Schengen visa cover the UK, Ireland or Cyprus?
No for the UK and Ireland: both need their own visas. Cyprus is an EU member that is still joining Schengen, so check with the Cyprus authorities before you plan to use a Schengen visa there.
Do you guarantee a Schengen visa?
No. Only the consulate decides. We help you choose the right consulate, prepare a complete and consistent file, and book the appointment.
Planning a trip to Europe?
Tell us the country and your dates. We’ll tell you which consulate to apply to and what your file needs.
